I’m going to call this tough juvenile Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys apalachicolae) “Lil G”, because of how tough it is! This little fella is actually one of @gregsturtlehaven ‘s recaptures from his research trapping on AST’s! This little one likely lost its foot due to a larger turtle being in the area and had other scars that point to the same. Despite the injury it has healed well, and this turtle grew since Greg last found it! It always amazes me how tough wildlife can be and resilie

Yesterday we came across the worst turtle injury I’ve ever seen! This beautiful juvenile Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys apalachicolae) was caught by @gregsturtlehaven as a part of his research and he saw this gruesome injury. Fishing hooks often times are found in the mouths of the turtles we catch in areas where baited fishing is popular, but to see this protruding from the skull was extra gnarly. Let’s address some of these common but absolutely incorrect comments, starting with snapping turtles biting entire limbs off people. While there’s plenty of recorded cases of alligator snappers removing fingers (and anecdotal tales of commons also removing digits), no turtle has ever been recorded removing an arm or leg. That’s totally false and ridiculous. You certainly want to be careful around them anyway, and the best way to stay safe is leave them alone and let them enjoy being turtles. #al
