Here’s an example of tension and release in a bass line going from a “broken two-feel” to walking. I used a “pedal tone” to build tension, and moved from there to an open line utilizing syncopation and space. I’m giving rhythmic information to the soloist and the drummer, leaving space for both of them. Then the sweet release of quarter notes!
